If you’ve played Illarion in the past, the first thing you probably notice is that things do not look as you remember them.
Illarion’s original graphics are not covered by its open source license. As much as we would love to use them for nostalgia’s sake, doing so would put us at risk of takedown requests.
In order to be able to launch, we have compiled a set of assets replacing every graphic that was in use during the Gobaith era of Illarion. This is composed entirely out of Public Domain assets. While functional, it is by far not complete or aesthetic, with many items sharing the same graphics and some being rough untextured homemade Blender mockups.
Eventually, we hope that this new open source set of graphics can mature into being a viable and legally sound replacement for the original proprietary assets. However, that will need a lot of time, and optionally, your help. The repository is available on GitHub and accepts submissions via Pull Requests. Please note that we require all submissions to be attributed in the CREDITS.csv file under a compatible Open Source license. We also do not wish to incorporate AI-generated assets in this repository.
The engine that Gobaith Reborn runs on also supports drop-in texture packs. While we cannot redistribute or facilitate the sharing of the original assets, you may be able to compile your own pack if you still have old Illarion client files, or obtain a pre-compiled pack from other players. Texture packs are .zip files that are dragged into the browser client or installed through the CTRL+, menu in the “Mods” area. That is the only way to install texture packs; don’t trust people who send you an .exe file or similar.
Please refrain from asking for or posting proprietary assets within our Discord channels.
